Family Portrait
Over the course of making a cup of coffee I think about all the moments and memories we will not share because of this pandemic. Be transported to the connective tissue of my imagination to a space where we can be together.
This piece stitches together the voices from videos sent between my family members on our WhatsApp group between November 2020 and February 2021, a time when we've been in constant lockdown here in the UK. The heartbeat is the ultrasound scan from my sister's pregnancy, none of us have been able to see her during the pregnancy or since the baby has been born.
The idea was that it might convey that agonising distance of emotional and physical connection that COVID-19 has caused but also, the bitter-sweet role of technology in its attempt to "connect" us. I wanted the piece to take the listener on a journey through my thoughts, using the medium of audio to mirror our imagination, where it's possible to simultaneously be stuck in your flat doing the same mundane things you do every day, and also with your family/loved ones, wherever they are.
I wonder if this evokes the feeling of the pandemic for you too?
